Samsung Electronics’ flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S24, which is scheduled to be launched early next year, is expected to be able to translate calls in real time using AI technology, according to the company, Thursday.
The Korean tech giant announced its mobile AI called Galaxy AI and the feature will be included in its next-generation Galaxy devices.
Through Galaxy AI, Samsung aims to offer a mobile AI experience that integrates its own on-device AI technology and technologies developed in collaboration with its partners. It is expected to be installed on major devices starting with the flagship model Galaxy S24.
On Wednesday, Samsung unveiled its own-developed generative AI model known as Samsung Gauss at the Samsung AI Forum. Samsung said the AI model, Gauss, was named after a German mathematician and consists of three sub-models, including a language model called Samsung Gauss Language, a coding assistant model called Samsung Gauss Code and an image generation model called Samsung Gauss Image. It added that it plans to gradually install generative AI models in various devices.
“Mobile technology has an incredible power to enable connection, productivity, creativity and more for people around the world, but until now, we haven’t seen mobile AI ignite that in truly meaningful ways,” said Choi Won-joon, executive vice president and head of R&D, Mobile eXperience Division of Samsung. “Galaxy AI is our most comprehensive intelligence offering to date, and it will change how we think about our phones forever.”
The real-time translation call function, called AI Live Translate Call, is one of the main AI technologies that will be installed on the next-generation Galaxy phone.
Users will be able to use the feature without installing a separate external app. When they speak in their own language, the conversation will be translated into the other person’s language in real time.
Samsung has not officially announced which languages will be supported, but it is understood that the languages currently being prepared for this function are English and Korean, based on the image provided by the company.
“AI Live Translate Call will soon give users with the latest Galaxy AI phone a personal translator whenever they need it. Because it’s integrated into the native call feature, the hassle of having to use third-party apps is gone. Audio and text translations will appear in real-time as you speak, making calling someone who speaks another language about as simple as turning on closed captions when you stream a show,” Samsung said.
One of the biggest advantages of Samsung's Galaxy AI function is that it is implemented as an on-device technology that operates on the smartphone without connecting to an external server. This allows users to use it without worrying about if their calls are being moved to outside servers.
